Dyson Omni-glide vacuum cleaner review: Cordless small wonder for your home

yson is a brand that needs no introduction and has a portfolio of devices aimed at helping people anywhere and everywhere, be it vacuum cleaners, air purifiers or more. The company earlier this year expanded its vacuum cleaner category with the launch of the Omni-glide, an all-new offering for the Indian market. While it is not a vacuum cleaner aimed at replacing the flagship V11 machine, it is aimed at small houses that can be cleaned in less than 30 minutes and, most importantly, comes at an accessible price.

Unlike traditional vacuums that are hard to reach tiny spaces in your sofa or inflexible enough to clean certain spots at your home, the Dyson Omni-glide is a solution for such places.

The company claims that the Omni-glide is the ultimate solution for getting into the tricky nooks and crannies. To help consumers, Dyson ships three tools or accessories with the Omni-glide for cleaning your roof or down low or sofas or curtains. The best part is it is a cord-free operation, which means you no longer have to think about handling lots of cables while cleaning with Omni-glide. The overall package costs Rs 34,900, which means it's more affordable than the Dyson V11, but is the new Omni-glide worth the price? Let's find out in our review.

Dyson Omni-glide review: Designed for manoeuvrability

Dyson Omni-glide is a vacuum designed for small houses, and that's something you will understand while unboxing the machine. It comes in a medium-sized box with all components nicely fitted in the retail box. So you get the Omni-glide with omnidirectional soft roller cleaner head, mini-motorised tool, combination tool, worktop tool, charging station, and charger.

It's a vacuum that you can assemble following the instruction manual or if you have used a vacuum cleaner before, then just follow your instincts. The first noticeable thing is the compact form factor and the lightweight design that's practical for everyday use. It sports a vertical handle that is very helpful while manoeuvring under furniture or your bed, or other places with low clearance.

The handle is an important part of Omni-glide's practical design. A compact unibody design allows users to hold the machine in any position and clean in any direction. The best part is that the handle extends all the way down to the cyclone assembly with buttons that are positioned ergonomically for ease of use. We have to compliment the team at Dyson for replacing the trigger design with one that's easy to swap hands easily.

There's a button on the handle to turn on the motor accompanied by another switch to enable maximum power mode. The biggest highlight of the latest Omni-glide is its main head, the omnidirectional soft roller cleaner head. The product derives its name from the cleaner head only.

Both brushes in the soft roller are wrapped in soft nylon to capture large dust particles or debris. There are also black anti-static carbon fibre filaments to remove fine dust. In addition, the re-arranged in-line design lets the vacuum lie flat and clean in tight spaces, something that the pricier vacuums aren't capable of.

The vacuum cleaner is powered by the company's Hyperdymium motor, which is compact in size and lightweight. It can spin at up to 105,000rpm to create suction on hard floors.

The company says that the vacuum can create eight radial cyclones to remove dust and dirt from the airflow while the five-stage filtration captures fine particles and traps them in the bin.

Dyson Omni-glide review: Practical solution for hard floors

During my testing, the Omni-glide fared well and offered a powerful suction that's suitable for hard floors. Right from fine dust to bread crumbs, the Omni-glide picks all that in one pass. The best part is that I didn't struggle to move the vacuum forward, backwards or even sideways. The manoeuvrability around the home is the biggest highlight of the Omni-glide and one that makes it highly recommended for young couples or for single people living alone. This one can reduce your one major task quite conveniently. While Dyson may not market it as a car cleaning vacuum, I did try it to clean my car, and it impressed me. Picking up fine dust from the car seat to the floor mat, it does all in one pass. However, due to its compact form factor, you may be required to clean up the dust bin in the centre of the stem more frequently if you're a regular vacuum user. Otherwise, it should last a week if you use it twice or thrice a week, in my opinion.

For cleaning carpets or soft floor coverings, the mini-motorised tool that ships with Omni-glide is ideal. Another highlight of the Omni-glide is it is easy to wash and easy to maintain vacuum. You can clean the dust build-up and wash the bin, filter, soft cleaner head and other tools without electronic components. However, the company recommends leaving the vacuum to dry for at least 24 hours before using it after cleaning the filter.

What makes Dyson Omni-glide a true wonder solution for cleaning hard floors are the four 360-degree castor wheels on the cleaner head. During a product briefing, the company executive explained how the cleaner head floats on four 360-degree stabilising casters that allow it to move effortlessly in all directions and into tight spaces. In addition, the castors' height and placement seem to have been engineered to ensure minimal resistance whether rolling forwards, backwards or sideways. Notably, sealed ball bearings allow for a smooth change of direction and minimise dirt build-up, making this a perfect everyday cleaning companion.

The two counter-rotating fluffy rollers are meant to pick up large debris and fine dust when moving forward and backwards. During the review, I didn't encounter any issues while using the fluffy rollers on hard floors. The good thing is that the soft woven nylon captures large debris while being gentle on hard floors. A worth noting part here is that the Omni-glide is easy to use vacuum and needs a minimum of training. In fact, I can admit that this is more of a DIY machine, right from the part where you took it out of the box.

For example, my mother has used vacuum cleaners in the past and, in this case, she liked Omni-glide's overall package, especially the part where she knew what head to use without needing to check the manual. A point that might be appreciated by everyone who wants to spend more time cleaning rather than having a training session first.

The articulating neck allows the machine to lay flat on the floor, so it's easy to clean under low furniture, again something that's not usually the case with many vacuums in India. The vacuum's manoeuvrability and narrow width make it easy to clean spots typically left unclean because of the tight spaces. The Omni-glide is an excellent solution for all such corners in your home.

The Omni-glide comes with a worktop tool that's ideal for cleaning kitchen cabinets, worktops, tables, and other hard surfaces like shelves. Then, it also comes with a combination tool that's a classic two-in-one tool with a brush and a wide nozzle for switching between cleaning your curtain to back again to hard surfaces. Lastly, the Omni-glide comes with a mini-motorised tool that packs a motorised brush bar that tackles hair and ground-in dirt, and the best part is it comes in handy in tight spaces.

While I couldn't test for pet hair, the mini-motorised tool in max mode is an excellent vacuum for all your hair on the floor. In addition, Dyson says that the tool is ideal for cleaning pet hair, so that's an added advantage.

Dyson Omni-glide review: Battery life

The battery backup is probably the biggest Achilles heel for the Omni-glide, and we have to blame the compact design for it. The vacuum has a runtime of up to 20 minutes, and that too depends on what mode you're using it. The company says the Omni-glide can last up to 18 minutes in eco mode while extending up to 20 minutes when using eco mode and a non-motorised tool. During my testing, the Omni-glide lasted for roughly up to 15-16 minutes in different scenarios, which isn't bad. You have to consider that the battery life varies depending on usage and the floor type.

The Omni-glide takes up to 3.5 hours to fully charge, as per Dyson. While I didn't test the battery recharge time, it's nice that you can forget that the Omni-glide is docked in charging overnight thanks to a smart tech used by the company. While up to 18 or 20 minutes would be fine for people living in a small apartment, but anything bigger than that might require multiple rounds of charging, which may be annoying to some extent.

On top, if you're using the max mode extensively, I noticed that the runtime dropped to around 10-12 minutes, but then, as I mentioned, it can vary depending on the floor type and usage.

Dyson Omni-glide review: Verdict

At Rs 34,900, the Dyson Omni-glide is an excellent package, but it may not appeal to everyone. It's slightly on the expensive side if you consider some limitations, like battery run time, small dust canister and, it is not as powerful as the V11. But then again, you will need to pay more to get the V11 in India.

In times of pandemic, the Omni-glide is a great vacuum cleaner for couples, singles, or even small families. You will be impressed by the way it handles dust and, sometimes, fine particles that you may not even notice while sitting on your couch or study table or other such places. The Omni-glide should also appeal to people with the know-how of vacuum cleaners because of its compact and lightweight design. This vacuum can make you atmanirbhar for at least handling cleaning at your home.

The Dyson Omni-glide is available in India in a single iron and purple colour and is available via physical as well as the company's online store. If you want a more powerful vacuum for your home, there's the V11, a very suitable alternative but more expensive.
